To Heal Or Not To Heal? - That Is The Question
What is healing and how is it distinct from curing?
Pain strikes everyone eventually and will infringe upon your life from time to time. It's not something you're likely to appreciate. If it's only mild your natural tendency will be to ignore it and hope it goes away on it's own. If severe, your immediate urge will be to do anything to make it disappear.
Healing is a return to optimal health or wholeness of body, mind, and spirit.
Curing is a return to no symptoms or obvious signs of disease, or something we do to bacon.
They are far from synonymous ideas. It's possible to have both, but it's common to have curing without healing as discussed last month in the story about my dad.
Who needs healing and why? I believe everyone breathing and walking this Earth for any length of time, because this is an injurious and distressing planet to live on.
We often depart from wholeness soon after birth evidenced by 70%of American children having been on at least one round of antibiotics by 6 months of age as only one of many examples. Once kids have been injected with multiple vaccines containing mercury, formaldehyde, aluminum, and antifreeze in addition to the live or killed virus, I would say that the toxic load precludes wholeness.
These are only the beginning of the physical, chemical, and emotional challenges of our lives that overwhelm our balance. We will discuss this more in upcoming months.
Do you have goals for the elimination of specific pains or indications of illness? These can be fine at times but do they aim high enough? Are you settling for basic comfort or do you likewise have the loftier target of restoring more of your original potential for passion, intelligent creativity, and vitality?
The following is a true story shared by one of my patients whom we will call Alexander:

"Dr. Matthew Norton gave me life and health after a long period of pain and frustration. Today, my whole family sees Dr. Norton on a regular basis.
In November of 1997, I developed the first symptoms that progressed into muscle weakness and atrophy, severe recurring pains in the left arm and shoulder, and lesser pains innumerous other locations. All this was combined with deep fatigue. I saw five physicians at my HMO and received conflicting reports.
Finally, after a great deal of evaluation it was believed that I had some sort of neurological problem, but exactly what was still unknown.
Through all this, I was on medication to reduce the pain. Several times I tried to wean himself off but each time the pain would be too uncomfortable, so I was forced to resume its use. After seventeen months of physicians and little, if any progress, I was becoming concerned about my future. Frustrated and unhappy about my situation, a friend suggested I try Dr. Norton.
So, I went to see him in March of 1999, but expected little, if any help. I was only 45 with a wife and 9-year-old daughter. I was hardly able to get on and off his adjusting table, let alone participate in any physical activities with my family.
Our specific X-rays, computerized nervous system stress assessments, and unique advanced chiropractic evaluation revealed significant structural distortions and functional disturbances sufficient to explain his declining condition.
I was afraid to try chiropractic because I didn't want someone twisting or cracking my back! My friend explained that Dr. Norton did none of that; he went on to tell me about his gentle approach to spinal adjustment.
I came to the conclusion that I could help Alexander and he was ready to get well. We initiated a corrective care program focused upon restoring lost function through enhancing nervous system communication rather than attempting to simply block out pain.
Dr. Norton said he didn't diagnose diseases, nor could he say he could cure my condition. He did say that from his evaluation of my spine, he could help me have a healthier spine and nervous system. I decided to give him a try.
After one month of care from Dr. Norton, I was off medication and on my way to an active, healthy life again. I was surprised and very pleased. Dr. Norton's methods of chiropractic worked for me.
Today I don't feel the pain and fatigue from my previous condition. Now I run regularly, ride my bike to work, and live an active, healthy, and happy life with my wife and teenage daughter. I have learned to respect my back and I keep my spine healthy with regular adjustments from Dr. Norton."

One of the most amazing aspects of Alexander's story is that since he wrote this, he has gone on to run several 26 mile marathons in the Santa Cruz, California mountains!
We will continue next month to explore these themes and their next logical extensions through a new story.
