One Bird Flu Over the Cuckoos Nest (Part 2)
[Catch up on last month's article (Part 1) here]
John Messmer, M.D., a Pennsylvania physician, said he doesn't think there's cause for alarm yet. Even if H5N1 jumps into the pool of human hosts, medical science is far more advanced than it was in 1918, when doctors didn't even know viruses existed.
I might add that the state of public health sanitation and nutritional understanding has markedly improved in the last 90 years, which have lessened our exposure to microbes and enhanced our immune resistance.
Dr. Daniel Hollander, professor of medicine at UCLA, said, "It's time to stop misinforming the public and fanning mass hysteria."
The Hudson Institute, a non-partisan policy research organization dedicated to global security and freedom, declared the avian flu to be for the birds. Senior fellow Michael Fumento said, "There is nothing new about this strain of virus. It was discovered in Scottish chickens in 1959. Thus, it has had at least 46 years to mutate to become transmissible from human to human, yet hasn't done so. Thus, it is unlikely that it will do so soon, if ever. The idea that we are overdue for a pandemic is mere superstition. There is no cycle or pattern."
Where Should We Look For Strength?
Once the apparently unnecessary fear is generated, what is the primary strategy being proposed to ease our concerns? The search is always for new drugs and vaccines to protect us. The paradigm underlying that approach insinuates that our innate immunity is insufficient and cannot be adequately strengthened to naturally safeguard us. Most of the time, that isn't true.
We were designed with an awesome internal defense mechanism, that when properly supported by various health-enhancing measures, allows us to remain vital and resilient in the face of challenging microbial assaults. If this were not true then we never would have survived as a species long enough to have developed vaccines and antibiotics. It's funny how we are never encouraged to look within and fortify our own self-healing potential without risky foreign chemicals.
What Fear Is Truly Valid?
If we're going to wrestle with fear, what should we be most afraid of? In this case, it may be the proposed solution. According to a December 9th article on Pharmalive.com, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist has tried to "push through a legislative proposal to immunize the drug industry from legal accountability for death, disability, or sickness caused by the use of pandemic flu vaccines and pharmaceuticals. It would give innocent victims no means of obtaining compensation."
Sidney Wolfe, M.D., of the Public Citizen's Health Research Group, said this legislation would be "...a gift to the drug industry but bad medicine for consumers under the guise of an impending public health 'emergency'."
During the fear-induced experimental swine flu vaccination effort in 1977, 4,000 fell ill and 1,000 came down with Guillain-Barre Syndrome (a rate seven times normal) as a direct result of the vaccine. It caused permanent paralysis in over 500 people and killed 32 according to a December 19, 2005 article in OnlineJournal.com. The government paid $90 million in damages.
"When we give government the power to make medical decisions for us, we, in essence, accept that the state owns our bodies." - U.S. Representative Ron Paul, M.D.
