Taking Control of our Terrain
What are some of the essential "terrain" factors that differentiate the disease-prone from individuals that are more disease-resistant? What are some of the choices we can make that minimize the impact of our genetic weaknesses while capitalizing upon our strengths? What actions can we take to prevent us from being potential victims that approach life in fear?
The primary general feature of disease resistance is developing and sustaining a dynamic, high-performance state of body and mind. A system that is so fine-tuned in its perception and subtle adaptive responses to life's persistent challenges that it always rises to meet them and thrive.
Let's look at four specific components of the equation. The first key is creating optimal cellular nutrition and elimination. This is where having a balanced and varied diet comes into play combined with high-quality science-based supplementation.
The diet should include large amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables (organic when possible) at its foundation. These should be complemented by healthy protein sources such as grass-fed beef, free-range chicken, seafood, and raw dairy products, along with whole grains, nuts, and beans. An abundance of pure water is also necessary. At the same time, you should avoid processed foods, partially hydrogenated oils, MSG, Aspartame (Nutrasweet), and excessive sugar.
Due to inadequate diets, depleted soils, and excessive daily stresses, it is important that you add supplements that include pharmaceutical grade antioxidant vitamins, minerals, Omega-3 oils, and Coenzyme Q10 as the minimum.
A second key is appropriately stressing your body and mind. Regular physical exercise that works the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems at gradually increasing levels of demand is critical to building a strong, germ-resistant body.
Stressing your mind means continually reading and using other forms of learning to expand your world of possibilities and set you freer to clarify and live your passionate purposes. This will increase your joy and sense of control. Both are very stimulating to immune health.
The third key targets the master system that is intimately connected to and directs your immune system function. That is your central nervous system. It is almost certainly the least understood and most neglected factor in creating a vibrant inner terrain, thereby allowing you to have a more harmonious relationship with the microbial world. Nervous system interference from spinal dysfunction disrupts self-regulating and self-healing communication, leaving you more vulnerable to infectious processes.
It is critically important to have a doctor of chiropractic provide an assessment of your spinal integrity including the use of computer diagnostics to evaluate your nervous system for interference. Most everyone visits their dentist regularly to look for cavities before pain develops, but most don't understand the urgency to monitor their spinal/neural condition beyond back pain concerns.
The final key is focused upon your proper orientation to stress. Stress is nothing more than a demand made upon your system that creates pressure or strain. It is neither good nor bad by nature. It is positive and health promoting if you possess the body, mind, and spirit skills necessary to perceive them as challenges that you can rise up to meet. If you lack the needed skills and perceive the stressor as a threat that may be insurmountable, producing anxiety, anger, or depression on a regular basis, then it will be negative and eventually lead to sickness and disease.
Soaring Beyond the Nest
A Cuckoo is a type of bird (since we are on an avian theme). However, according to the American Heritage Dictionary, it is also a foolish person or simpleton. You don't want that to describe you as you confront the gloom and doom news of menacing viruses. Choose to live as a confident victor rather than a fearful victim through intelligent understanding and sound action steps.
Maybe we should take the approach of Jack Nicholson's character in the movie One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest as we consider our orientation to the possible bird flu pandemic. When he realized that his fellow inpatients were being kept comfortably under control through drugs and other novel brain modifying interventions like electro-convulsive therapy and frontal lobotomy, his primary aim was to help them wake up and challenge the system. He sought to empower them to claim their freedom before it was too late.
Don't live in fear of all the disastrous things that could happen someday. Fear depletes your immune resistance anyway. Instead, stay awake and be proactive through learning about and then nurturing your innate capacity to heal yourself.
