(Excerpted from Dr. Norton’s soon to be published book: Where Does It Hurt? Surprising Stories and Transforming Insights for Releasing Pain and Restoring Whole Body Health)
The next day I shared my findings with them, which I described as multiple severe spinal misalignments resulting in major nervous system disturbance. I told Ruth and Victoria I had a game plan that could greatly minimize, if not resolve, her painful condition.
I made it clear to Victoria though, that I needed her willingness to come to my office multiple times a week for a while. These visits would give us a chance to release the dysfunctional pattern she was stuck in. If she could just summon the faith of a mustard seed, I would do the rest.
In the Biblical Parable of the Mustard Seed in Matthew 13:31-32, Jesus compares the Kingdom of Heaven to a mustard seed. Although having some of the smallest seeds, the mustard plant grows to a large size, providing shelter for birds. The story has been interpreted to mean that grand things can grow from tiny actions.

<Pain Perspective>
The chronic severe pain had pulled Victoria into a protective shell, guarding her from further harm in a dangerous world. Fully focused on her moment-to-moment misery and desire to escape, she’d lost her motivation to care about anything other than the next painkiller.

Her mother, knowing that taking too many painkillers is dangerous, tried to keep medication away from Victoria. That simply made her angry.
So I let Victoria know that I was a determined person and that after twenty-three years of study and patient care, I rarely failed. My comment elicited a slight laugh, which was her only response during the entire time I was relating my findings. Still, I had touched a small spark in her; we were on our way.
An initial miracle occurred after the first two days of adjustments. To be specific, Victoria wasn’t curled up into a protective ball with her face hidden any more as she sat in the waiting area. She walked with greater ease and I found her reading a brochure while waiting for me on the adjusting table. More signs that the dimmed light bulb was regaining some brightness.
I looked at Victoria’s face as I approached her and noticed a bit of a smile. I asked her what was different and she reported that she had experienced some pain relief.
Several amazing improvements continued day by day before our very eyes. My staff could hardly believe she was the same person. Before long, she began driving herself for her visits rather than needing help from her parents. She started to open up and share more with me, even discussing plans for her future that she had previously lost interest in. Her light keeps getting brighter.
These days, Victoria continues to feel better and better. A more spontaneous happiness is emerging and she cares to spend time with friends again. Watching vibrancy come to light in her body, mind, and spirit has been simply incredible and a joy to participate in.
