(Excerpted from Dr. Norton’s soon to be published book: Where Does It Hurt? Surprising Stories and Transforming Insights for Releasing Pain and Restoring Whole Body Health)
“Satisfaction consists in freedom from pain, which is the positive element of life.”
- Arthur Schopenhauer (19th Century German Philosopher)
Have you been suffering with pain for so long that it seems normal to hurt, and in fact, you can’t remember when you last felt good? Possibly you haven’t struggled with pain in the past, but recently something has changed and now out of nowhere you have pain challenges and don’t understand why or what to do.
Both ways, to some degree you are in captivity and that was not the blueprint for your life.
We’re going to explore an action plan aimed at setting you free from your pain and distress to live at your vital and dynamic best. Before we do however, let’s briefly examine the self-regulating and self-healing capacity of your body because it’s the foundation of that action plan.
Your body works wonderfully as long as there is no interference. (We will address some possible interference sources in Chapters 9 and 13).

<Incredible Fact>
Your heart started beating on its own at about four weeks post-conception. It will continue to beat 24 hours a day 7 days a week, hopefully for at least 80 to 90 years without trouble. It isn’t just a heart but an entire cardiovascular system that works in conjunction with your respiratory system and is dependent upon your digestive, immune, and other key systems to maintain optimal function.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Who taught you to beat your heart? Obviously nobody did. It was all perfectly wired for that activity with directions on when to begin. There is an awesome intelligence or wisdom within you, running the entire show of your complex physiology. It operates through subtle chaotic rhythms and flexibly adapts you to a frequently hostile and ever-changing environment. This balancing act is termed homeostasis and is the essence of health or wholeness.
Your best doctor is always the one residing within you. It should be honored and respected for its incredible capacities. It is truly the only one with the ability to heal you (return you to wholeness) when you get too overwhelmed and depart from that ideal state.
