Why has chiropractic treatment been cast in a negative light historically? The following piece of history helps explain.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<Incredible Fact>
The American Medical Association (AMA) was found guilty in the U.S. Supreme Court in 1987 (in the Wilk v. AMA lawsuit) of violations of the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890, which was enacted to limit monopolies. In the words of U.S. District Court Judge Susan Getzendanner following a decade of litigation, “. . . the AMA has engaged in a lengthy, systematic, successful, and unlawful boycott designed to restrict cooperation between MDs and chiropractors in order to eliminate the profession of chiropractic as a competitor in the U.S. health care system.”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Judge Getzendanner ruled that, over a 25-year period, the actions of the AMA had resulted in serious damage to the cooperative process in health care, to the chiropractic profession as a whole, to individual doctors of chiropractic, and to the patients they served. She said the AMA was “guilty of engaging in a conspiracy.”
This travesty not only reveals how far business organizations will go to manipulate public opinion to protect their own power and financial concerns, but it has also tragically prevented a majority of people in America and the world from benefiting from chiropractic services.
How might your or your loved ones’ health care actions have been influenced by the AMA Council on Quackery, assembled solely for portraying doctors of chiropractic as unscientific charlatans?
How does this affect your thinking today, knowing that the matter of chiropractic validity was purposefully communicated to be negative?
If you have been warned against chiropractors or told they aren’t “real” doctors, I encourage you to reconsider your perspective. Given that this perspective came from a malicious source, it may serve you to reconsider, explore, and experience chiropractic and reach your own conclusions.
It’s possible that many medical care providers who hold negatively biased opinions toward chiropractors and “alternative” health care providers don’t understand the origin of their viewpoint, either.

<Key Clarification>
In spite of this disharmonious backdrop stemming from politics and profit concerns, increasing numbers of medical doctors, nurses, pharmacists, etc. are receiving the benefits of chiropractic and referring their patients for care. More doctors of chiropractic are also building bridges of cooperation within the medical community.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I’m convinced that a more harmonious relationship between traditional and non-traditional providers with greater understanding of each other’s services and contributions is essential for the public’s well-being.
Every day, I see the powerful healing benefits of chiropractic care with my patients. Unfortunately, because many lack knowledge or aren’t open to a different approach, countless pain-releasing and health-restoring possibilities remain undiscovered.
