“The greatest evil is physical pain.”
- Saint Augustine

“Pain is no evil unless it conquers us.”
– George Eliot, author

When pain (especially if severe) doesn’t resolve, but rather nags and persists, it drains our energy and vitality and can lead to permanent loss of function. It often diminishes our ability to perform duties and achieve personal goals. Chronic pain can also sabotage many pleasurable activities that give our lives satisfaction and meaning.

Sometimes injuries or illnesses are so severe that, even with the most accurate diagnosis and appropriate healing intervention, the damage is too great to avert permanent consequences and chronic pain. On occasion, you might respond quickly and try a variety of treatments to restore proper function, yet still struggle with ongoing pain.

When complete and balanced function isn’t restored to areas overwhelmed by injury and stress, certain conditions settle in and quietly decline over time. We adapt until we can’t adapt any longer. That’s when the pain becomes extremely difficult to resolve. Much physical and emotional trauma could be fully (or mostly) healed if we were better able to recognize it and take optimal measures.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<Pain Perspective>

In chronic situations, your nervous system has memorized the dysfunctional patterns and pain messages become amplified, even when the original cause occurred decades earlier and has been long forgotten.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The moral of this story? It’s critical to have a prompt, accurate, and complete assessment of the damage and then commit to pursue needed treatment to restore full function and heal, regardless of time or money.

Healing Hints

  1. Do everything you can to address and fully correct the effects of any injuries and stresses you experience immediately, whether physical or psycho-emotional in origin, and whether you hurt or not, to minimize the chances of your nervous system memorizing the dysfunctional pattern, leaving you to develop chronic pain and permanent damage down the road.

  2. Do not trust the lack of pain in the weeks, months, and even years following trauma as verification that you haven’t been negatively impacted. The scars of traumatic overwhelm on any level are frequently deposited quietly but with eventual debilitating consequences. I see the tragic results everyday in my office.

  3. Don’t give up seeking the underlying cause of your pain and the best means of restoring balance and optimal function. Don’t cover it up, but rather uncover its cause and true solution. Then commit to whatever it takes to correct it and become whole again. “Not just pills for pain, when instead you could be whole again”.

  4. Get a computerized nervous system stress assessment, any needed spinal x-rays, and a general chiropractic evaluation ASAP to clarify the condition of the frame that supports your body for a lifetime and the communication network that allows it to run and truly thrive. Don’t wait, do it today while change is still possible. Call 559-490-9550 for an appointment or for assistance in locating help near you. Go to www.DrMatthewNorton.com for more information.

  5. Order Dr. Norton’s new book Where Does It Hurt? during the Buy One, Get One FREE to share with a friend special pre-publication sale by going to www.WhereDoesItHurtBook.com before Dec. 31st. The sale will end on that day.
